Family photo session guide

Here are some helpful tips when coordinating your family members' outfits.

Wardrobe selection

When choosing clothes for family members please try to stay with natural tones. Make sure the colors you choose complement each other. Remember the goal is coordination, not exact matching.

I typically advise starting with Mom’s outfit and then coordinating the rest of the family around that color scheme. Choose 2-3 colors that compliment mum’s outfit, so some neutrals and a pop of color bring everything together.

Earth tones always photograph nicely year-round. The good choices are white/creams, light grey, tans /beige, dusty blue, brown, sage green, khaki, blush, burnt orange, mustard yellow, dark green, and terracotta red.  Mixing color tones is fine.

I recommend avoiding bright colors like red, green, and yellow, as they can cast color onto the skin. Avoid large logos or busy patterns, as they can be distracting. Stripes can photograph strangely and often make you look bigger than you really are.

Layers and textures add depth to the photos (lace, detailing on a shirt/pants, tweed, and cable knit).  Consider bringing accessories like scarves or hats for variety.

For mums, long/midi-length dresses or skirt/top combo are incredibly flattering.  They provide a lot of movement which is great for all those running around, and playing with your kids portraits.

Dads, unless it’s a wedding, ditch the suits! Opt for clothes that let you move freely. With young kids, you’ll be chasing, playing, and running around, so comfort is key. Jeans are fine, but consider colored pants in neutral or light earth tones for a stylish touch. Button-downs, henleys, or t-shirts are great choices. Keep comfort at the forefront when dressing up.

Choosing the right shoes is crucial for completing your outfit. Consider the location of your session when selecting footwear. Avoid athletic sneakers and kids should skip shoes with cartoon characters.

Please plan your outfits in advance and make sure they fit and are comfortable (aren’t itchy or too tight). For outdoor sessions please remember to dress for the weather. A cold or hot baby will not be happy in your images.

I am happy to help with any clothing questions or concerns. I encourage you to send me outfit choices if you need help. Opt for timeless and comfortable clothing. Layers and accessories can add depth to your photos. Don’t forget comfortable footwear!

Hair and makeup

Keep hair and makeup natural, enhancing your features without being overly dramatic. A light touch-up before the shoot can help you feel confident and camera-ready.

Props and personal Items

Bring your kids' favorite toys, think about something that makes them laugh, and give us beautiful smiles (song, funny sounds, games etc). If you have meaningful props or personal items you’d like to include, such as a family quilt or favorite toys, bring them along. Consider any activities you enjoy as a family that could be incorporated into the shoot, like playing games or enjoying a picnic.

Rest and nourishment

Ensure everyone is well-rested and well-fed before the session. Hungry or tired family members might not be as cooperative. Bring along water and light snacks to keep energy levels up during the shoot if needed.

Special Requests

If there are specific shots or moments you’d like to capture, please let me know in advance. I’m here to accommodate your wishes and make this session truly memorable.

Relax and Have Fun

The most beautiful photos capture genuine emotions and interactions. Relax, be yourselves, and enjoy the moment! Don’t worry about posing perfectly. I’ll guide you through some natural poses, but candid shots often turn out the best.

Don’t hesitate to suggest poses or shots you have in mind. The goal is to capture your family’s genuine interactions and emotions. Relax, enjoy each other’s company, and have fun! Allowing kids to explore and play can lead to authentic smiles and expressions. While posed shots are essential, I’d like to get some candid moments during the shoot. Genuine laughter, hugs, and interactions can result in some of the most heartwarming and memorable photographs. The photo shoot is a chance for your family to bond and create lasting memories.

Well,  I understand it can be overwhelming to plan photos for your family but it’s worth it to put the time into planning so you LOVE your photos.
